Doula Advocacy Award - APHA
Rachel Abramson, HC One's Executive Director, has been selected for this year's Outstanding Leadership/Advocacy Award by the APHA's Maternal and Child Health Section, for her leadership in advocacy for the community-based doula model. She accepted this award during the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia on Tuesday, November 10, at the Martha May Eliot Luncheon.
The Outstanding Leadership/Advocacy Award recognizes leaders who serve at a local, state or national level and who have made significant contributions to the field by creating the political will to improve the health of mothers and children.

Doulas in Japan
As many of you may have read in our Winter 2008 Newsletter, Executive Director Rachel Abramson went to Japan in December 2007 to spread the community-based doula message in the Far East. She, along with former HC One Intern Rieko Kishi and HC One-trained doula Loretha Weisinger, presented at the Japanese Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Conference. The presentations can be found (in Japanese) here. Enjoy!
Doula Project Award
Our original "Doula Project," funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was highlighted at the 20th anniversary meeting of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Local Funding Partnership Program in Scottsdale, AZ. As part of a panel celebrating successful local, statewide and national projects, Rachel Abramson, HC One's Executive Director, shared the story of the HealthConnect One (formerly Chicago Health Connection) Doula Project, which became the pilot for national replication of the community-based doula model. In 2003, The Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies State Impact Award went to HCO for this work. For more information about the original project, check out the report on the Robert Wood Johnson site.
