Steven V. Hunter is a trial lawyer who represents national and multinational companies in complex business disputes, intellectual property disputes and product liability defense.   

 

Mr. Hunter has successfully represented general contractors, subcontractors and landowners in construction defect and construction delay disputes, as well corporations and entertainers in various premises liability/negligence actions.  He has represented automobile finance companies, restaurant franchises, members of limited liability companies, and lending institutions.  His pro bono work includes securing a defense verdict on behalf of a minor wrongfully charged as an adult with a Class X felony in Cook County Criminal Court, prosecuting the civil portion of hate crime proceedings and defending a jury verdict against discharge in United States Bankruptcy Court, and representing clients in a range of family law disputes involving child custody, child abuse, DCFS proceedings and asylum.

 

Mr. Hunter represents clients in all phases of litigation and alternative dispute resolution, including discovery, motions practice, arbitration, mediation, jury trials, bench trials and appeals. In addition to serving as trial counsel, Mr. Hunter has partnered with clients on risk management and liability assessment issues, such as litigation management, insurance coverage and record retention policies. Mr. Hunter has prosecuted and defended a number of cases, including those involving fraud, consumer fraud, breach of contract, breach of warranty, breach of fiduciary duty, shareholder disputes and derivative actions, RICO violations, nuisance, negligence, professional negligence, temporary restraining orders and Lanham Act violations. He has successfully represented clients on these and other business issues as lead counsel at arbitration, mediation, motions practice and trial. Mr. Hunter is also regularly invited to speak on issues related to trial practice, legal ethics, diversity and pro bono.

 

Steven V. Hunter holds a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served on the Barrister’s Council and the National Black Law Students’ Association, and was twice the Eastern Regional Trial Champion.  He also holds an A.B. in Political Science & Economics from Brown University.  He was named to “40 Illinois Attorneys Under 40 To Watch” by Chicago Lawyer magazine and The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin in 2008; received the “Maurice Weigle Exceptional Young Lawyer Award” from the Chicago Bar Association in 2006; received the “National Pro Bono Associate Award” from DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary, US LLP, in 2006; and has been awarded annually in recognition of outstanding service to the legal profession, the organized bar and community.
