A community doula for more than 10 years, Loretha knows that pregnant teens need guidance and education, not judgment or pity. In the face of overwhelming challenges—from absentee fathers and drug addiction to the disparagement of society—a doula reveals how one person can make a difference in the lives of young mothers and their babies.

Community-Based Doulas Learn about their impact on high-risk communities across the U.S.

The impacts of HealthConnect One and the community-based doula model are transformative. There is no greater work in our communities than building stronger families and advocating for the health and wellness of the youngest members.

Healthy births are the cornerstone of a healthy community. Our society will do well, only when our children are healthy and thriving, starting at birth.

HealthConnect One transforms how babies are born and cared for in their crucial first few months of life. We collaborate with low-income communities and communities of color across the country to ensure support for the most vulnerable families in every part of their lives from the hospital to the workplace.

HealthConnect One believes every baby, mother and family has the right to thrive and reach their highest potential — including parents and families from every race, income and background. Because mothers and children in low-income and communities of color face significant health disparities, we partner with people, organizations and institutions in these communities to remove barriers around the time of birth.

Rocio Martinez, the 2015 winner of HealthConnect One’s Durbin CHW of the Year Award, is an amazing Breastfeeding Peer Counselor, working tirelessly to support new mothers in her Chicago community, including mothers with special needs and premature babies.

Ms. Martinez is an advocate for breastfeeding in the Latina community and her rates for helping women successfully breastfeed are exceptional. Trained as a peer counselor 20+ years ago by HealthConnect One, she has been on Spanish-speaking television and radio as a breastfeeding expert. She helps guide moms to a place of strength so they may speak up for their babies and the quality of care they receive.

Rocio is someone who goes above and beyond, who is proof that this work is not a job but a passion, a calling.
